Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Salmon Management.

Finian McGrath

Question:

285 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the steps he will take to deal with the immediate problem regarding salmon rivers here (details supplied); and if a detailed response will be provided to the information outlined. [17785/03]

The Government has, in recent years, introduced a range of measures for the conservation and management of salmon fisheries. These measures have been outlined most recently in a comprehensive document which was presented by my Department at this year's annual meeting of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) in Edinburgh. This document provides detailed facts on the operation and extent of Irish salmon fisheries and is designed to answer frequently asked questions regarding, among other things, the size of the catch, exploitation levels in the fisheries – commercial and rod – and the systems that are in place to manage Irish Salmon Fisheries.

This document is now available on my Department's website, www.dcmnr.ie, and I will ensure that a copy is sent to the Deputy for his information.
