Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - General Practitioners.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

342 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the total number of general practitioners currently practising here; the number practising in the 1970s; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17815/03]

The most recent available figures indicate that the number of general practitioners participating in the GMS scheme at 31 December 2002 was 2,134. This compares with 1,123 at 31 December 1973 and 1,144 at 31 December 1974. It should be pointed out that not all general practitioners hold GMS contracts.
