Vol. 569 No. 3

Written Answers. - Methane Gas Levels.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

410 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if his Department will identify the source of unusually high levels of methane gas in Leixlip, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17735/03]

I assume that the question refers to the Rye Bridge area of Leixlip where an unpleasant odour has been emanating from the sealed rising main sewer that discharges, near that location, into the town's gravity system. Elimination of the odour, which is due to hydrogen sulphide, is an operational matter for Kildare County Council. I understand that the council is conducting a series of trials to determine the most effective solution.
