Question:

140 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Taoiseach the trend in foreign direct investment flows in each of the years since 1997; and the forecast for 2003. [18675/03]

The Central Statistics Office introduced a new series of balance of payments statistics for Ireland in May 2000 commencing with the 1998 reference year. The new series included data on foreign direct investment statistics by foreign firms in Ireland and Irish firms abroad and the figures for the years 1998 to 2002 are as follows.

Year

Foreign Direct Investmentinto Ireland

Abroad

1998

£6,226m

£2,743m

1999

£13,676m

£4,516m

2000

€28,706m

€5,024m

2001

€17,524m

€6,553m

2002

The Central Statistics Office does not compile forecasts of direct investment flows but will shortly publish estimates for the first quarter of 2003. Any revisions to the figures for earlier periods will be made at that point.
