Vol. 570 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of topics under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss the following urgent matter of national importance, namely, the failure to plan for and recruit sufficient specialist nurses to complete and sustain extremely expensively assembled multi-disciplinary surgical teams in Crumlin and other acute hospitals; the impact of this failure on patient mortality and the Minister's short-term and long-term plans to prevent further tragedies.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the cutbacks and lack of adequate resources at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, which is leading to a reduction in the level of beds and other services. An insufficient number of intensive care nurses caused the cancellation of heart surgery for a two year old girl from County Limerick who died within 24 hours of the cancellation.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following matter of urgent local and national importance, namely, the fact that Monaghan General Hospital has now been one year off-call. Surgical ward 2 is under temporary closure in Cavan General Hospital; and the danger to other rural areas that the winding down of services in the Cavan-Monaghan hospital group might be used as a template for the overall restructuring of the health services, which would be a disaster for rural Ireland.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following specific and important matter requiring urgent consideration, namely, the tragic death of a young child after her scheduled heart surgery at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin had to be cancelled due to a shortage of intensive care nurses. The Government is culpable in this death because it has ignored for years the growing crisis at the hospital which was highlighted in the Pollack report six months ago.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the dramatic downturn in the tourism industry in many parts of the country, resulting in staff lay-offs and imminent closures of many tourism enterprises and the need for Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland—

Sorry, Deputy, only the notice submitted to my office is appropriate under Standing Order 31.

—to intensify their marketing efforts both in the domestic market and the traditional tourism market.

Having considered the matters raised, I do not consider them to be in order under Standing Order 31.
