Vol. 570 No. 3

Written Answers. - Care of the Elderly.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

225 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Health and Children the action he has taken to date following the 2002 report from the working group on elder abuse; the progress on the establishment of a national centre for research and training; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19103/03]

The report of the working group on elder abuse recommended that the provisions in the report be implemented on a phased basis. Implementation of the report commenced this year when I approved funding of €800,000 for that purpose.

The report also recommended the establishment of both a national implementation group and a national centre for research and training. At present, I am considering the composition of the national implementation group, with a view to having it established and holding an inaugural meeting in early September. Once the national implementation group has been established, it is intended to proceed with the preparatory work on the establishment of a national centre for research and training.
