Question:

363 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will make safe a channel at Oldcastle, Meelick, Swinford, County Mayo, to prevent nearby grazing cattle from drowning. [20265/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 359 and 363 together.

The section of river in question is part of a channel of the Moy catchment drainage scheme. All of this channel, including the section of river in question, was cleaned in August 2003. The works carried out did not create a hazard for livestock. The banks of the river at this location are low and the water is shallow. Any hedging along the river bank that was interfered with in the course of the works was replaced with fencing. No further maintenance works are considered necessary at this time.
