Question:

531 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a full time assistant will be provided for a person (details supplied) with special needs in County Mayo. [20178/03]

The application for the pupil in question was re-examined by the national educational psychological service, NEPS, in light of additional information provided and the original decision was upheld. A letter dated 8 September 2003 issued to the school authorities in this regard.

532 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be provided with sufficient assistance to enable that person to progress in national school. [20179/03]

I can confirm that additional information in connection with an application for special educational supports for the pupil in question was submitted for consideration by the national educational psychological service. A response is expected to issue to the school authorities shortly.

533 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo with special needs has been left at home, even though an application was submitted months ago for a teacher assistant and resource hours to enable them to commence secondary school. [20180/03]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, following receipt of a report from the national educational psychological service, my Department has now approved an allocation of a full-time special needs assistant and five hours per week resource teacher support for the pupil in question. The school authorities have being notified of this decision.
