Vol. 571 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Seán Crowe

Question:

1210 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the cost to the State of policing the Reclaim the Streets demonstration on 22 September 2003; the resources which were committed to the demonstration; and his views on whether the deployment of so many gardaí was necessary. [20718/03]

The Garda authorities inform me that the cost of policing the Reclaim the Streets demonstration on 22 September 2003 was €9,764.54. They are responsible for the day-to-day allocation of resources, including personnel, and they inform me that the resources committed to this demonstration are an operational matter and therefore confidential and cannot be dis closed. All matters and eventualities were considered in the policing of this demonstration and Garda management is satisfied that the level of personnel committed was necessary.
