Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Richard Bruton

Question:

305 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the exact procedures which a parent with a child with special educational needs should initiate to obtain support for a move from a special needs pre-school to an integrated service within an ordinary primary school; the exact criteria for allocation of the special need resources; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23256/03]

Parents of a child with special educational needs, SEN, wishing to enrol their child in a mainstream national school should contact the principal of the school in the first instance.

The principal may submit an application to my Department for additional SEN resources should the school be unable to meet the pupil's needs from within its existing capacity. The criteria for the allocation of SEN resources are contained in Department Circulars 07/02, 08/02 and 24/03. Copies of these circulars have been circulated to schools and are available on my Department's website, www.education.ie
