Question:

449 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of reports of vandalism to cars at a location (details supplied) in Dublin 3; if arrests have been made; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22843/03]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 448 and 449 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that two incidents relating to damage to cars have been recorded in the specific location referred to by the Deputy. In each case, a person has been arrested and charged by the Garda and is currently before the courts. With regard to the Ballybough area of Dublin 3, I understand that local Garda management is aware of an increase in vandalism to vehicles during the three month period ending in September, as compared with the previous three months. This increase is partly due to thieves taking advantage of the large number of vehicles parked there during match days at Croke Park. I am further informed that in addition to normal Garda patrols on such occasions special operations and crime prevention measures are put in place by the local Garda management to deal with such crimes.
