Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Ministerial Transport.

Seán Crowe

Question:

451 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans to review the guidelines for the use of State cars by Ministers in view of the high costs to the Exchequer of providing this facility; and if such guidelines will include rules restricting the use of this facility by members of the Cabinet to activities connected with their work as Ministers rather than personal, party or constituency business. [22903/03]

State cars are placed at the disposal of the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, 13 Government Ministers, the President, the Chief Whip, the Ceann Comhairle, the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Justice and former Taoisigh and Presidents.

The provision of the Garda drivers, cars, fuel, maintenance and depreciation of the vehicles are the key components of cost to the Exchequer in providing State cars. I have no plans for a review of long-standing arrangements for the use of this facility.
