Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rail Network.

David Stanton

Question:

89 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Transport the progress regarding the possible reopening of the rail link to Midleton in east Cork and the development of Kent Station in Cork; the estimated cost of both of these developments; when he expects to be able to make a decision on same; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23151/03]

The Cork suburban rail proposals are currently under consideration in the context of the implementation of the strategic rail review. An implementation group comprising officials from my Department and Iarnród Éireann is currently considering a medium-term rail investment programme that arises from the recommended investment strategy in the review, which was recently presented by Iarnród Éireann.

As regards the proposed development of Kent Station, Iarnród Éireann has informed me that it is in discussions with Cork City Council and a developer regarding a commercial development at Horgan's Quay, which would finance new customer facilities for Kent Station. There are still a number of planning issues to be resolved here mainly with regard to the mix of development and the phasing in of the project. The cost and completion dates of the project have not yet been finalised.
