Vol. 572 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

121 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Transport if he intends to privatise the fixed speed cameras; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23069/03]

Together with my colleague, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, I am pursuing the early engagement of the private sector in the operation of speed cameras. The objectives are to improve enforcement of road traffic law, to reduce the incidence of road crashes caused by excessive speeding and to enable the Garda authorities to redeploy resources from the processing of speeding fines to other policing priorities. A working group representing Departments and other interested parties is urgently examining a range of issues with a view to ensuring that the engagement of the private sector in managing a network of speed cameras will effectively achieve the objectives set out above.
