Vol. 572 No. 4

Written Answers. - Legal Aid Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

208 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the average amount of legal costs in judicial separation, divorce and other family law cases; the way in which these figures compare with original expectations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23649/03]

My Department has no record of costs in respect of people who obtain legal services in judicial separation, divorce and other family law cases with solicitors outside of the Legal Aid Board. The Deputy will understand that such cases are private between solicitors and their clients. As regards cases dealt with under the Civil Legal Aid Act 1995, I can inform the Deputy that the Legal Aid Board does not maintain information on costs in the format requested. The board's annual report and accounts show the costs incurred by the board in providing legal services but those costs are not analysed as between family law and non-family law cases, or even as between different categories of family law cases.
