646 Mr. Murphy asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government if he intends to increase substantially the allocation for bring sites in 2004 in order that re-cycling can be maximised, in view of the fact that a charge by weight will be introduced in 2004. [24955/03]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 645 and 646 together.
Since November 2002, I have allocated over €22 million towards 71 local authority recycling projects, details of which are set out in the table which follows. To date, local authorities have drawn down approximately €4.896 million. I intend to announce further capital allocations as projects are developed. Taking account of the substantial operating costs incurred by local authorities in operating such facilities, I have announced that, for the first time, €5 million is being provided from the environment fund to assist local authorities in meeting such costs. Some €2.5 million of this has already been allocated and a second tranche of allocations, which will take into account more recent data on additional recycling facilities provided by the local authorities, will be made shortly.
