Vol. 573 No. 4

Written Answers. - Economic Competitiveness.

Richard Bruton

Question:

136 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the concerns he has that a lack of competitiveness in the economy may have a negative impact on Irish agriculture; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25480/03]

I am keenly aware of the importance of the competitive position of the Irish economy and the implications this has for the agri-food sector. Issues in the economy such as inflation, productivity and international comparisons are being monitored and analysed at all times and have impacts for all sectors of the economy, not just agriculture. With regard to agriculture, which is highly export dependent, I am particularly conscious of Ireland's competitive position given the reports on competitiveness, which my Department sponsored, from researchers such as Professor Gerry Boyle of Maynooth college and Professor Alan Matthews of Trinity College. I am particularly anxious that competitiveness within the sector should be kept under review. It is in regard to such concerns that I have decided to revisit the report of the agri-food 2010 committee in light of recent developments in the CAP and WTO. The terms of reference of the new committee are being drafted.
