Vol. 573 No. 5

Written Answers. - Non-Resident Accounts.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

66 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Finance the investigation which is being held by the Revenue Commissioners into the case highlighted in the recent report of the Comptroller and Auditor General in which a bank (details supplied) which was cleared by the Revenue Commissioners' DIRT look-back programme was subsequently found to have at least 102 bogus non-resident accounts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25777/03]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that as a result of their investigations following the voluntary disclosure scheme in 2001 for bogus non-resident account holders, High Court orders were sought and obtained by them in relation to 26 financial institutions. One of the institutions is that referred to by the Deputy. The information provided on foot of the relevant High Court order is being examined by Revenue and, as a result, further inquiries into the matter are being undertaken. The Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners informed the Committee of Public Accounts on 16 October 2003 that he would not draw any conclusions until Revenue's examination is completed. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.
