Vol. 574 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Jack Wall

Question:

209 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of pupils attending a school (details supplied) in County Kildare; the number of teachers at the school; the number of special assistants at the school; the number of resource hours allocated to the school; the number of resource teachers at the school; the pupil-teacher ratio at the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26635/03]

Minister for Education and Science (Mr. Dempsey)

The enrolment at the school in question on 30 September 2003 was 492 pupils. The enrolment on 30 September 2002 was 498, which warrants a staffing of an administrative principal and 17 mainstream teachers for the 2003-04 school year.

The school also has access to two full-time learning support teachers – one post is shared with another school – three permanent special class teachers for children with autistic spectrum disorder, ASD, one temporary special class teacher for children with ASD, two special class teachers for children with mild general learning disabilities, MGLD, two resource teachers, one support project teacher, two temporary language support teachers and five Giving Children an Even Break posts.

Under Giving Children An Even Break, schools categorised as urban with the highest concentrations of at-risk pupils, including the school referred to by the Deputy, are supported, where necessary, through staff allocations to implement a pupil-teacher ratio of 20:1 in junior classes – infants through second class – and a pupil teacher ratio of 27:1 in senior classes – third through sixth class. In line with normal staffing arrangements for national schools, teacher post allocations for the purpose of Giving Children An Even Break in respect of the 2003-04 school year are determined by reference to enrolments in junior and senior classes at 30 September 2002.

On the basis of this approach, and to enable the school to adhere to the maximum class size guidelines for all junior and senior classes, five teaching posts under Giving Children An Even Break have been allocated for the 2003-04 school year. There are 16 full-time special needs assistants and four part-time special needs assistants assigned to the school. Of these, nine full-time special needs assistant posts and two part-time special needs assistant posts are deployed to cater for the pupils attending the special classes for ASD. There are five full-time special needs assistant posts assigned to pupils attached to the special classes for pupils with MGLD. Two full-time special needs assistant posts and two part-time special needs assistant posts are assigned to individual special needs pupils in mainstream classes.
My Department has sanctioned 43.5 hours resource teaching support to the school to cater for 15 special needs pupils. The two resource teachers are deployed to cater for these pupils.
