Vol. 574 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Education.

Seán Ardagh

Question:

242 Mr. Ardagh asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the position for the education of young offenders in the Clover Hill and St. Patrick's institutions; when these schools will be operational; the number of vocational teachers who will be employed in each institution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26769/03]

My Department allocates teaching hours to vocational education committees to support the delivery of education programmes in the prison system. Such allocations are made under the heading of co-operation hours with other institutions.

A total of 76.98 whole-time equivalent teaching posts have been allocated to City of Dublin VEC to cater for seven prison units for the current school year. This allocation includes support for the delivery of an education programme at Clover Hill. A further allocation of five whole-time equivalent teaching posts was allocated to City of Dublin VEC to support the delivery of an education programme at St. Patrick's Institution for the current school year.

I understand from the prison education service that arrangements are being put in place for the delivery of an education programme at both Clover Hill and St. Patrick's Institution.
