Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Smoking Ban.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

168 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children the amount of expenditure which has been committed, from 1 January 2003 to date on legal advice services, public relations services, advertising campaigns and economic consultancies by his Department, and by the Office for Tobacco Control, in connection with proposals to ban tobacco smoking in the workplace; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27995/03]

Legal advice on this matter has been provided by the Chief State Solicitor's Office and by the Office of the Attorney General in accordance with normal practice and my Department is not charged for this advice.

Public relations fees amount to €46,585, including VAT. No expenditure has been incurred by my Department in regard to advertising campaigns or economic consultancies.

As the office for tobacco control is a separate statutory body, officials of my Department have contacted the Office and asked them to reply separately to the Deputy in regard to expenditure incurred by it.

Question No. 169 withdrawn.
