Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Women's Human Rights Project.

Aengus Ó Snodaigh

Question:

208 Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will consider increasing the funding to the women's human rights project in 2004 to allow it to continue and increase its monitoring and education work as mandated under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. [27927/03]

The project is one of 70 projects funded under the equality for women measure of the National Development Plan 2000-2006. The measure is a positive action programme designed to advance the position of women in Irish society. The projects are being funded on a once-off basis with the intention of mainstreaming the learning into various policy arenas at their conclusion. The measure is not intended to provide core funding to any of the organisations being supported.

The project mentioned by the Deputy aims to raise awareness of women's human rights issues in Ireland. In June 2001 it was allocated €126,973 over a two year period. In May 2002 a further €29,220 was allocated, bringing the total grant approved to €156,193. To date a total of €136,219 has been advanced and the outstanding balance of €19,974 will be paid between now and the end of the year.
