Vol. 575 No. 1

Written Answers. - Public Transport.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

51 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Transport his plans for an integrated public transport system; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27698/03]

The establishment of my Department as a stand alone Department of Transport, encompassing national roads, public transport and aviation, is testament to the priority which this Government is giving to the need for integrated transport policies.

Sectoral plans are already in place for the various transport modes. I am now setting out and communicating an overarching vision for a more seamless transport network, including the development and delivery of an integrated public transport system. An integrated and sustainable approach to the development and delivery of public transport services is a specific policy objective outlined in my Department's statement of strategy with key objectives, strategies and outputs for the integration of public transport for the three years 2003 to 2005.
My intention is that the overall integrated transport policy framework which is being developed will set out targets in the context of an overall vision for the entire transport sector.
