Vol. 576 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grocery Industry.

Billy Timmins

Question:

111 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the fact that the current milk price war is breaking the grocery prices order; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29383/03]

Responsibility for the enforcement of the groceries order lies with the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs. Accordingly, any alleged breaches of the order should be referred to that office for investigation.

I understand the director has investigated a complaint received in this matter and is currently considering what further action to take.

Question:

112 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the reports (details supplied) that some multiples may be insisting that suppliers do not supply to their competitors; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [29384/03]

I am aware of the report concerned and have brought the matter to the attention of the Competition Authority, which is the independent statutory body charged with the enforcement of competition law in the State. The authority is currently considering what course of action to take in the matter.
