Vol. 576 No. 2

Written Answers. - Food Labelling.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

128 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself that no re-labelling of food or food products can take place which might have the effect of misleading the consumer or might otherwise affect the authenticity of the product; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29481/03]

Under the general food labelling legislation, which is the responsibility of the Department of Health and Children, it is prohibited to make a statement on a label that would mislead the consumer. This legislation is enforced by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, FSAI.

Certain regulations on the labelling of food products that come within the remit of my Department, such as beef, fruit juices and potatoes, set down specific requirements for the labelling of these products. These requirements are such that consumers cannot be misled about the authenticity of the products. The beef labelling regulations are currently enforced by the FSAI and the enforcement of the requirements on the other products will be transferred to the FSAI shortly. Beef labelling has been the subject of much comment in recent times and I am determined that the consumer is properly informed. Accordingly, with regard to the beef slaughtering and cutting plants under the control of my Department, I have asked the Department's veterinary inspectorate to examine the procedures in place and ensure full compliance with labelling requirements.
