Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

268 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science further to Parliamentary Question No. 179 of 2 December 2003, the persons who will be consulted in respect of the examination of the long-term educational needs of the area in question at both primary and post primary level; when he expects the examination to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29876/03]

The examination of the area referred to by the Deputy involves an assessment of demographic trends, housing developments, enrolment trends, diversity, current provision and value for money solutions for identified needs. In this regard, through its involvement with the Dublin school planning committee, my Department is in regular consultation with the relevant local authority and all the various school patron bodies. The local school inspector is also involved in the process.

The school planning section expects to have the examination in question completed shortly and a decision will then be taken on how best to provide for the area into the future. The timing of when any capital projects for the area can proceed is dependent on the financial allocation for 2004 and subsequent years and the competing priorities for that funding.
