Vol. 576 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

421 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government the total amount of money allocated to Donegal County Council in 2003 towards road gritting; if he will grant extra resources to enable the council to carry out gritting on regional roads, such as the back of Errigal Road, at which a number of accidents have already occurred mainly due to the lack of gritting; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [29838/03]

The maintenance of non-national roads is a matter for the relevant local authority to be funded from the authority's own resources supplemented by State grants. In 2003, the total non-national road grant allocation from my Department to Donegal County Council is €27,089,005, of which a sum of €1,674,000 has been allocated in respect of the grant category, "discretionary maintenance". The council may use this grant, supplemented by its own resources, to fund various works including gritting on non-national roads. The prioritisation of works to be funded is a matter for Donegal County Council.
