Vol. 576 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Mary Upton

Question:

174 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science, further to Question No. 121 of 27 November 2003, if Bull Alley VEC will continue to provide secondary education in view of the fact the children in question have no local alternative and that the facility offers education to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. [30235/03]

My Department recently received correspondence from City of Dublin VEC stating that the Liberties College, Bull Alley, would not be recruiting first-year students for its junior cycle programme with effect from the commencement of the 2004-05 school year. The basis for that decision is that low and declining enrolments have made the continuation of the programme unviable.

The implications of the decision, including those for the proposed building project, are under consideration in the school planning section of my Department.
