Vol. 577 No. 1

Written Answers. - Middle East Peace Process.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

21 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement on Resolution 1515 at the United Nations relations to the Middle East peace roadmap. [30412/03]

The Security Council of the United Nations unanimously adopted Resolution 1515 at its meeting on 19 November 2003. The resolution was introduced by Russia and co-sponsored by France and Chile. The short resolution endorses the quartet road map and calls on the parties to meet their obligations under it in co-operation with the quartet.

In its preamble the resolution reiterates the demand for an immediate cessation of all acts of violence and reaffirms the vision of two states living side by side within secure and recognised borders. The preamble also emphasises that a comprehensive solution must include the Israeli-Syrian and Israeli-Lebanese tracks. Resolution 1515 is a welcome acknowledgement that the proposals contained in the road map have the backing of the entire international community as represented by the United Nations.
