Vol. 577 No. 3

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

Seán Crowe

Question:

243 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the implications for the public ownership of education here in the current draft of the proposed EU Constitution. [31115/03]

While we must await the outcome of the Inter Governmental Conference, I cannot envisage a reason at this stage that the Irish people should not be able to react positively to the new article relating to education as it is currently drafted. The principal change proposed to the existing article on education and training in the draft constitution is the inclusion of a specific legal basis for Union action in the field of sport. The Government will continue to work to defend Ireland's interests in the realm of education in the ongoing negotiations.
