Vol. 587 No. 3

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with several notices under Standing Order 31. I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise an issue of urgent public importance, namely, the indefensible decision to refuse permission to the NGO Peace Alliance, an alliance of religious, peace and developmental organisations, to hold a peace picnic in Phoenix Park on Saturday 26 June following the departure of President Bush from Ireland on the grounds that such an activity is inappropriate for our national heritage properties.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise an issue of urgent public importance, namely, the need for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to keep his promise made to the parties at the first briefing on the citizenship referendum that he would move to regularise the situation of approximately 11,000 families with children who are Irish citizens, who face separation from their parents or effective exile as a result of Government policy, which would bring Irish policy into line with its European partners with respect to the obligation to uphold the rights of children to the care and company of their parents enshrined in the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, as outlined by the Advocate General in the Chen case.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise an issue of urgent public importance, namely, to have the Minister for Education and Science address the urgent need to have class sizes reduced substantially in schools catering for socially disadvantaged children in the light of the intense pressure on teachers and students in such schools.

Having given the matters full consideration I do not consider them to be in accordance with Standing Order 31.
