Dáil Éireann debate -

Vol. 698 No. 4

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 32.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 32. I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to debate the following urgent matter: the Government-caused threat of Garda strike action, which will leave people throughout the country at the mercy of gang crime and will cause an escalation of criminal activity, which already sees elderly and vulnerable people viciously attacked and robbed in their homes, as happened in County Longford last week.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to debate the following urgent matter: the impending closure of 32 raised bogs nationally, including eight in County Galway, under the European Union habitats directive; to seek a reprieve by the Government of one of the craziest decisions ever made, which will prevent thousands of bog owners from cutting their own domestic supply of turf from their own bogs next year at a time when oil prices are escalating and the economy is on its knees and now the only response of the Government is to evict such bog owners from their own properties. The Government should pause and stop this madness now.

Deputy Barrett, we need that interconnector fast.

Having considered the matters raised, they are not in order under Standing Order 32.

When does the Ceann Comhairle think they will be in order?

A Cheann Comhairle, it is Christmas.
