JOINT COMMITTEE ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY SECURITY debate -
Wednesday, 6 Feb 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

The minutes of the meeting from 30 January have been circulated. Are they agreed? Agreed.

A letter has been received from the Secretary General of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government replying to a number of queries raised by this committee. Is it agreed to note it and return to it at another meeting? Agreed.

A newsletter has been received from GLOBE Europe. Is it noted? Noted.

Rather than note the Statement of Strategy 2008-2010 of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, I propose we return to it at a future meeting? Is that agreed? Agreed.

We received only one copy of the recent Friends of Europe report on climate change but we will get one for everybody in the audience.

The Marine Institute of Ireland requested to make a presentation to the committee. It will be very worthwhile. I would like to go to Galway to see the institute, during which trip we could organise a meeting. We will ask the clerk to get in touch with Peter Heffernan, whom I know from my days as Minister for the Marine. The institute is a very good organisation and well worth a visit. We will probably gain more by visiting than by inviting delegates to make a presentation to the committee. Is that agreed? Agreed.

No. 3 is the draft report on the visit to Brussels of Deputies Hogan and Cuffe. Is it noted? Noted. It is to be laid in the Oireachtas Library.

The Renewable Heating and Cooling Conference is to be held in Austria on 5 March and 6 March. One member has expressed an interest in attending. If anybody else is interested, he or she should notify the clerk to make final arrangements.

A delegation from the Environmental Protection Agency was present at our last meeting. We suggested it return to complete its contribution. I will suggest this for our next meeting and invite Dr. Jerry Murphy, who was recommended at the last meeting. Is that agreed? Agreed.
