JOINT COMMITTEE ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENERGY SECURITY debate -
Wednesday, 3 Mar 2010

Business of Joint Committee.

Members have been circulated with a document from the energy office in Leinster House on the Oireachtas energy management plan. Significant progress has been made in this regard. In January 2010, CO2 emissions were 15% less than in the previous year with 3% and 30% reductions in electricity and heating usage respectively. This shows the savings possible and that public buildings should lead by example. I am glad Leinster House has led the way. I have asked the clerk to the committee to write to the staff involved and congratulate them on their efforts, highlighting how we are playing some part in doing what we are preaching to others. I have also asked for a report from the Office of Public Works on the overall energy management position in other public buildings to compare records. It is nice to have some good news these days.

I endorse the Chairman's remarks. It is all the more remarkable given the exceptionally cold weather in January and that the Houses have been sitting more often than in the previous ten years.
