JOINT COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC REGULATORY AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 2 Sep 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

The Commissioner for Energy Regulation has a function in setting prices for electricity and gas for domestic and business consumers. Energy prices have been increased in recent months by virtue of a recommendation by the regulator, supposedly to reflect the vast increase in the price of oil. As members will be aware, the price of oil is tumbling again. However, the Commissioner for Energy Regulation appears to be in a state of suspended animation as the price falls. Is it possible for the joint committee to write to the commissioner to ask when he intends to review the price of electricity and gas for consumers and when the joint committee will be notified of his decision?

I will write to the Commissioner for Energy Regulation if members are in favour of Deputy Behan's proposal. I suggest we also invite him to attend a meeting of the joint committee.

Before we conclude, was a decision taken on the correspondence received from Mr. Vincent Jennings of the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association?

Yes, it was agreed to invite the CSNA to appear before the joint committee on 23 September 2008.

The joint committee adjourned at 2.52 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 23 September 2008.
