JOINT COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC REGULATORY AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 14 Oct 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

On the continuing drop in oil prices, I raised at our last meeting the increase in prices by the ESB and Bord Gáis. Oil prices are tumbling, but the response we have received is that there will be no further moves in this regard for another couple of months. We should request that the investigation be progressed with a view to another recommendation being made sooner. On petrol prices, many have said to me and, I am sure, other public representatives that prices at the pumps are not reflecting the drop in oil prices. I wonder if the committee can write to the Competition Authority to ask if there is scope for an investigation into whether there is price fixing in the retail petrol supply market. I propose that we at least ask that question of the authority.

We will communicate with it in the matter.

The joint committee adjourned at 2.05 p.m. until 10 a.m. on Wednesday, 15 October 2008.
