JOINT COMMITTEE ON ENTERPRISE AND SMALL BUSINESS debate -
Wednesday, 2 Jun 2004

Business of Joint Committee.

Tesco has informally told me that its representatives want to make a comprehensive report concerning our investigation into the retail sector. They have said, however, that they will not be able to supply all relevant information to the joint committee until mid-September. I am seeking permission from the committee to defer our investigation into the sector until the third or fourth week of September. Is that agreed? Agreed.

We are working under a time constraint this morning because Deputy Howlin must attend the Dáil at 11.20 a.m. to speak on a Bill. Therefore, I have asked the delegation from the Irish Road Haulage Association to be brief and make a 15-minute submission. Members of the committee have already received the submission. I will now ask the Clerk to summon the witnesses.

As regards the insurance inquiry, I will also request the Clerk to see what countries have established a traffic corps. The committee should visit one of those countries to ascertain how successful the traffic corps system is working there. Is that agreed? Agreed. The Clerk will let us know, but I think the system operates in Australia and one or two other countries. We will have to apportion the business, with different delegations going to one or two countries. We want to have that information before we sit for the next part of the insurance inquiry. Apologies for her absence have been received from Deputy Kathleen Lynch.
