Business of Sub-Committee.

In correspondence dated 8 June 2009, Mr. Bernard Rice of Teagasc clarified a statement he made at a meeting of the sub-committee on 6 May 2009. In this clarification Mr. Rice states:

In my contribution to the Dáil committee hearing on May the 6th in response to a query from Deputy Ryan, I referred to the fact that his constituent, Neil McGrath, (maker of straw briquettes) had commented to me about market competition from biofuel imported from Argentina by Bord na Móna. On further inquiry it appears this referred to the import of a very small trial amount of biomass pellets, which was not followed up and has been discontinued. So I would like to withdraw any misleading impression I may have created that this represented an ongoing threat to home produced briquettes.

I heard in the interim that Bord na Móna does not import briquettes and that any briquettes sold on the Irish market are manufactured in Ireland. We are very proud of Bord na Móna and the work it does both in the production of peat briquettes, in its waste management programme and by getting involved in the energy area. I am glad the correction has been made.

Does anybody else wish to comment? We will move forward.
