JOINT COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT debate -
Wednesday, 21 Jul 2004

Business of Joint Committee.

I apologise for arriving late at this meeting. Was the problem at Aughinish dealt with earlier?

Yes, we dealt with that. It was No. 3 on the agenda. The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children is dealing with the matter and until it has concluded its deliberations it will be pointless for us to pursue it. We would be only duplicating the work of that committee.

The issues are EPA-related so I do not see why we should be duplicating that work.

The matter was down for discussion. We discussed it and made a decision. We can come back to it again in the autumn if the Deputy wishes.

It might require a site visit.

This is the last meeting of the joint committee before the summer recess. I thank the members for their support and assistance during the year and look forward to meeting them all again in September.

I thank the Chairman with whom it has been a pleasure working. He has been courteous at all times.

I wish to be associated with that expression of thanks and to add thanks to the clerk and the secretary. They did fantastic work in handling the business through the year.

I too wish to be associated with those thanks to the Chairman and the administrative staff.

I thank the officials too who have carried out their work without any comment.

I too wish to be associated with the words of thanks to the Chairman and the officials.

The joint committee adjourned at 4 p.m. sine die.
