Vol. 15 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INDUSTRIAL ASSURANCE.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he proposes to introduce legislation dealing with industrial assurance, in view of the statement of the Industrial Assurance Committee in July, 1924, that the control and safeguards provided by the existing law are entirely inadequate and that the law requires drastic amendment and strengthening.

Legislation has been in preparation for a considerable time. I hope to be in a position to introduce it in the autumn. I fully recognise the need for legislation, but must be careful to see that no avoidable prejudice is caused to existing assurance contracts.

Does the Minister recognise the necessity not merely of avoiding prejudice to existing assurance contracts, but of securing the safety of those who have taken out policies?

That is really what I was referring to. Care must be taken to see that no avoidable prejudice is caused to existing assurance contracts in favour of those who had paid premiums.
