JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 29 Jan 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

No. 1 is a brief from the European Commission on the Commission's package of legislative proposals on climate change and energy. Members will recall that the European Commission representation held a briefing session last Thursday morning on the package of legislative proposals on climate change and energy and it was adopted last week. The key aim of the proposal is that by 2020, Europe should have reduced its carbon emissions by 20%, improved its energy efficiency by 20% and obtain 20% of its energy from renewable sources. A briefing note and background documentation has been circulated to the members. I am sure Members have studiously read the briefing note. I have no doubt there will be a later discussion on this issue because the issue that will arise is whether the proposals are sufficient and achievable.

Does anybody want to comment? It is therefore noted. I suggest members carefully study the proposals because there will be a beneficial impact and there are positives and negatives in this area.

Sitting suspended at 2.04 p.m. and resumed at 2.05 p.m.
