JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN AFFAIRS debate -
Tuesday, 15 Jul 2008

Business of Joint Committee.

We have the minutes of the meetings of 3 and 8 June. Deputy Pat Breen had sent an apology which was not recorded. It has now been recorded. Are the minutes agreed? Agreed.

No. 3 on the agenda is correspondence. The correspondence received since the last meeting has been circulated. Is it agreed to note item R173, correspondence received from the President of the Senate of the Netherlands regarding rectification of the Lisbon treaty? Agreed.

Item R174 is correspondence received via the Office of the Ceann Comhairle from the Friends of Europe inviting attendance at the state of Europe policy summit in Brussels on 9 October. With the permission of the committee, I propose to ask the secretariat to prepare a proposal to attend the conference and have an estimate for consideration at our next meeting. It is a very important subject matter. The state of Europe is hugely important and there needs to be a careful input.

It is proposed to note item R175, correspondence from CPMR, Claudio Martini regarding the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe. Correspondence has already been sent to the committee in regard to this matter. The conference has significance for Ireland. We need to examine the issue in the context of the discussion we will have in private session.

The joint committee went into private session at 3.50 p.m. and adjourned at 4 p.m. until noon on Wednesday, 13 July 2008.
