JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN UNION AFFAIRS debate -
Thursday, 17 Nov 2011

Business of Joint Committee

The point that every member made about the Irish connection was valuable, as were Mr. Djelic's remarks at the end concerning the issues that arise, for example, elections and the importance of getting a resolution to the Balkan question despite the opposition of substantial forces to the European path. The outcome of the election will be a major step along the way. It is approaching quickly. Progress along the path towards European accession, candidacy discussions and so on is important.

Arising out of our meeting, perhaps we should make a recommendation to the Government in much the same way as we made a recommendation on the question of Bulgarian and Romanian work permits so that we might outline some of the issues raised and highlight the importance of progress being made in that direction. Were I to ask the secretariat to draw up a couple of paragraphs, we would have a look at the recommendation and get something done before 9 December. Is that agreed? Agreed.

Is it agreed that we go into private session? Agreed.

The joint committee went into private session at 12.45 p.m. and adjourned at 12.50 p.m. until 11.30 a.m. on Thursday, 24 November 2011.
