JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sub-Committee on Human Rights) debate -
Thursday, 27 Feb 2003

Vol. 1 No. 8

Election of Vice Chairman.

There is no official position of vice-chairman but should the sub-committee wish to consider a nomination, it can be discussed.

I propose Senator Mooney.

I second that.

There is a proposal that Senator Mooney be vice-chairman. Is that agreed? Agreed.

It is an honour, having been a member of this committee for some time. I appreciate that it is not an office holding position or anything of that nature.

I look forward to working with Senator Mooney.

In light of the comments from Deputy Michael D. Higgins and my proposal, the Chairman might outline specific areas in which the committee could operate. I am not talking about travel but specific areas could be looked at.

We will do that; members should feel free to put forward suggestions in this regard.

My recollection is that at the last meeting of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs one or two items were referred to this committee.

The protection of children in time of war is a human rights issue on which there would be much material in Geneva.

I thank joint committee members and will revert to them on the issues raised.

The joint committee adjourned at 10.12 a.m. sine die.
