JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS debate -

Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy.

I am sure members will join me in expressing the deepest sympathy of this committee to the family, friends and partner, Ms Annette Dolan, of the late Deputy Tony Gregory. I came to know Deputy Gregory before he was elected to Dáil Éireann in 1982 and not long after that he became a very prominent figure in Irish politics. I always found him to be honest, courteous, hardworking and witty. He will be deeply missed by all his friends and colleagues in the Oireachtas, and in particular by the members of this committee, of which Deputy Gregory was a long-standing and active member. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

I ask members and those in the Gallery to observe a one minute silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Deputy Gregory

Before we do so, on behalf of Fine Gael I wish to be associated with the remarks of sympathy to the relatives and friends of the late Deputy Gregory.

On behalf of the Labour Party I wish to join with those statements. Deputy Gregory was a person of great principle and an active member of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs for many years. We will miss him.

Deputy Gregory was a constituency colleague of mine in Dublin Central for almost two decades. I would like to be associated with the expressions of sympathy here today.

Members rose.
