JOINT COMMITTEE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND TRADE debate -

Business of Joint Committee

No apologies have been received. I hope every member will attend. I remind members and those in the Visitors Gallery to please ensure their mobile phones are switched off completely for the duration of the meeting as they cause interference, even in silent mode, with the recording equipment in committee rooms. I ask everyone to respect my instruction.

No. 1 on the agenda is the minutes of the previous meeting held on 8 February which have been circulated to members. Arising from our discussion last week on Ireland's campaign to secure election to the United Nations Human Rights Council, I wish to advise the committee that following yesterday's informal meeting with the new Italian ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Mr. Zanini, he was in contact with Rome this morning. He has confirmed to me personally today that Italy will support Ireland's bid for election to the Council. This is a welcome development and I thank him for his support. Earlier this week the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was also so notified. Obviously, we will do the same in other informal meetings with ambassadors in coming weeks. Are the minutes of 8 February agreed? Agreed.
