Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities debate -
Wednesday, 13 Dec 1978

Work of Joint Committee.

As this is the last meeting for this session it is appropriate to refer to the exceptional work that has been undertaken by this Committee since we were set up. In that time we have produced 37 reports. This is more than half the output of the previous Committee. However, I do not wish to make that kind of comparison but what we have achieved is a great tribute also to the clerk and his staff for the amount of work they have done and it is a tribute, too, to the way in which our work has been organised recently. The new Sub-Committee arrangements have worked well. We have had four separate Chairmen working on specific aspects of the Committee's responsibilities. This has facilitated to a considerable extent the very satisfactory output of this Committee. There is a massive volume of material to be studied. We are now working on proposals at an early stage so that we have some opportunity of influencing the final shape of what emerges. I express my thanks to the Chairmen of the Sub-Committees and also to all the Members who have attended Sub-Committee meetings and who have done so much to produce 37 reports in such a short time.
