JOINT COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORT debate -
Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Business of Committee.

Is there any other business?

The document in regard to Valentia came before the committee. Having reviewed the response from the Department of Transport, my request still stands that we invite the assistant secretary of the Department and the head of the Irish Coast Guard to come before the committee to substantiate the report.

Unfortunately, as I said to Deputy McGrath who raised the matter prior to Senator Daly coming to the meeting, while the issue is an important one, I understand from the clerk that there is no date available in this session for a further meeting. Every week is booked out. We fully appreciate the importance of this issue for the Senator and his native area and everything will be done to see what is possible. We will speak to the Chairman on his return because it is a very important issue.

Not wishing to say anything against my learned colleagues from Dublin, in reality this is an issue that affects Donegal and Kerry. I have spoken with all parties, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil and this committee, and I suggest we have a special session to deal with this issue. The matter does not affect Dublin Deputies. While all members are very busy I suggest a date be arranged for a special session comprising Deputies and Senators from Donegal and Kerry who are anxious that this issue be dealt with.

I suggest we adjourn the meeting and have a chat with the Senator afterwards regarding the issue.

The joint committee adjourned at 5 p.m. until 3.45 p.m. on Wednesday, 4 June 2008.
