Vol. 6 No. 13

SUMMER-TIME ORDER, 1926—MOTION OF APPROVAL.

I beg to move:—

"That the Seanad hereby approves of the Summer Time Order, 1926, made by the Minister for Justice under the Summer Time Act, 1925."

I can very briefly explain what this Order means. A date was fixed in the permanent Summer Time Act passed by the Oireachtas last year. The Act provided that that date might be varied by an Order of the Minister for Justice. Last year the time at which Summer Time came into force was different in the Free State and in Northern Ireland, and I think was also different in France. This year, if you pass this motion approving of the Minister's Order, Summer Time will commence on exactly the same date in the Free State, in Northern Ireland, in Great Britain, and in France. The date is, I think, 18th April. It is hardly necessary to argue that that is clearly an advantage, and that it is very clearly, generally desirable both from a railway and general business point of view. It is extremely awkward to have different dates on which the time is changed in the different countries.

I beg to second.

Motion put and agreed to.
