Seanad Éireann debate -
Friday, 22 Jul 1927

Vol. 9 No. 4

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - PUBLIC BUSINESS.

I move:

That three members of the Seanad, to be nominated by the Committee of Selection, be appointed to serve with three members of the Dáil on the Joint Committee on Standing Orders to be set up in pursuance of Order 7 of the Standing Orders relative to Private Business.

I second the motion.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Do you propose to suggest the names of the Committee?

I suggest that they be left to the Select Committee, and if it is convenient that the Committee should meet at two o'clock the next day the Senate meets.

Motion put and agreed to.

CATHAOIRLEACH

The selection is to be left to the Selection Committee The next matter is a message from the Dáil:—

Dáil Eireann has passed the following Resolution, in which the concurrence of Seanad Eireann is desired:

"That it is expedient that a Joint Committee consisting of three members of the Dáil and three members of the Seanad be set up to assist and advise the Ceann Comhairle and the Cathaoirleach in the direction and control of the Oireachtas Library."

Agreed.

CATHAOIRLEACH

The next message is to the following effect:

Dáil Eireann has passed the following Resolution, in which the concurrence of Seanad Eireann is desired:—

"That it is expedient that a Joint Committee consisting of five members of the Dáil and five members of the Seanad be set up to assist and advise the Ceann Comhairle and the Cathaoirleach in the direction and control of the Oireachtas Restaurant."

The peculiarity about this message is that while this is practically reviving a committee whose duties would expire on the expiration of the Session, that committee whose duties have expired was appointed not merely to look after the Restaurant but also to superintend and look after the internal accommodation of the Oireachtas. That has been left out, I do not know whether by accident or by design. I do not know what it is proposed to do with regard to the supervision of the internal accommodation of the Oireachtas. It occurred to me that there cannot be any hurry about it and that it might stand over until we next meet. In the meantime, I will ascertain from the Ceann Comhairle what it is proposed to do with the other duty this committee has discharged this Session. I propose that this message be left over and it will appear on the Agenda again, the next day we meet.

Agreed.
